Maruti Suzuki Dzire Outsells Every SUV In April 2026: Full Sales Picture

India’s April automobile sales hit a record high, with 4,07,335 passenger vehicles sold — the best April ever, up 12.21% from last year.

Dzire Beats the SUVs

The biggest story in April automobile sales is the Maruti Suzuki Dzire finishing number one. It sold 23,580 units, growing nearly 39% compared to last April. This is surprising because SUVs usually rule the Indian market. But the Dzire won buyers over with good fuel economy, low running costs, and an affordable price tag. Fleet operators and family buyers both preferred it over rivals like the Hyundai Aura, Honda Amaze, and Tata Tigor.

Tata Punch Is Catching Up Fast

The Tata Punch, including its electric version, came in second in April automobile sales with 19,107 units — a massive 53% jump over last year. City drivers love it for its compact size and SUV-like look, and it is gaining fans in smaller towns too. With only about 4,500 units separating it from the Dzire, the gap is closing fast.

Rural India and Green Fuels Drive Growth

A key trend in April automobile sales is the strong push from rural areas. Villages and small towns grew 20.4% compared to just 7.1% in cities, and now make up 41.2% of all sales. Buyers in these areas are choosing CNG cars heavily — CNG vehicles took a 22.62% market share. Electric vehicles also grew, reaching 5.77% of sales, up from 3.70% a year ago.

What Comes Next?

Experts expect April automobile sales momentum to continue through FY27. New model launches, rural spending, and stable car prices should keep demand healthy. The wedding season and the coming festive months will likely add another boost. The big question is whether the Dzire holds its lead or the Punch finally overtakes it, making the compact car race one to watch closely.
